The premiere aired (the first time) on Halloween 2010, and it was stunning. This isn't Hercules: The Legendary Journies.... with Zombies (although admittedly, Hercules was a great show in its day). This show has film-quality monsters.
While concept borrows heavily from films like 28 Days Later, the story of the Zombie Apocalypse clearly has the depth that lends itself well to a "saga" storytelling method that television provides. The show is actually based on a comic book series (same name) and appears to be extremely faithful to source material.
Given AMC's success with Mad Men, the director having filmed The Shawshank Redemption, and the popularity of all things undead, this show could easily get huge in the coming year.
The Walking Dead brings a cult comic to life... again...
